GITAM to hold Third Convocation on Sep 15th

Bay News Network, Visakhapatnam: GITAM University has announced to hold its third Convocation Ceremony on Saturday 15th September 2012 at the University campus. A total of 1350 students will be awarded degrees on the day. Dr.Thirumalachari Ramasami, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, would be the Chief Guest and will deliver the Convocation address.

Prof. K. Ramakrishna Rao, Chancellor, GITAM University will preside over the function.

Prof. G. Subrahmanyam, Vice-Chancellor of GITAM University, informed that students who have secured highest CGPA in their respective programmes during the year 2011-12 will be awarded Gold Medals. He also informed that the University will confer three honorary degrees on the eve of third Convocation. The recipients are:

Prithvi Raj Singh Oberoi:
The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of EIH Limited, is a legendary hotelier, a visionary and an embodiment of the spirit of achievement and excellence in business leadership. He made Oberoi Group a global brand by taking the concept of luxury to a new paradigm. He is acclaimed as the “Founder Father of Modern Luxury Hospitality in India”. He was honored with the Padma Vibhushan in recognition of his exceptional service to the country. Mr. Oberoi is credited with placing Oberoi Hotels on the international luxury travellers’ map with the opening of several new luxury hotels in important locations all over the world, thus redefining architectural and design standards in luxury hospitality.In recognition of his lifetime contribution to the Hospitality and Tourism Industry, GITAM University takes pleasure in conferring the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) on Mr. Prithvi Raj Singh Oberoi.

Dr. Nedunuri Krishnamurthy:
Sangeetha Samrat Dr. Nedunuri Krishnamurthy is a living legend in Carnatic Music. As a practitioner and a guru of music, he worked relentlessly for its propagation and preservation, blending together the art and science of music. He rendered invaluable services as the Principal of several prestigious colleges of Music and Dance. His performance at music concerts, valuable publications, and his large and renowned “sishya parampara”, speak volumes of his unflinching commitment and devotion for the cause of Carnatic Music.

He is well known for his Annamacharya Compositions. His tunes are acclaimed as “Fountains of Bhakti Rasa”.In recognition of his lifetime contribution for promoting the cause of Carnatic music, GITAM University takes pleasure in conferring the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) on Dr. Nedunuri Krishnamurthy.

Dr. Sunkara Balaparameswara Rao:
Dr. Sunkara Balaparameswara Rao is an eminent internationally known Neurosurgeon with outstanding contribution to the field of Neurosurgery. He is hailed as the “Father of Neurosurgery in Andhra Pradesh”. He had a brilliant academic career studded with honours and medals. He rendered valuable services in reputed Medical Colleges across Andhra Pradesh. He is also an institution builder, who established and nurtured the Department of Neurosurgery in Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam.In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the field of Medicine and Neurosurgery, GITAM University takes pleasure in conferring the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) on Dr. Sunkara Balaparameswara Rao.


Vice-Chancellor Prof.G.Subrahmanyam informed that the University is offering 109 UG, PG and Doctoral Programmes in diverse fields such as Technology, Science, Management, Pharmacy, International Business, Architecture and Law. He briefed that the University has nearly 11,500 regular students and over 450 research scholars hailing from almost all States of the country.

Vice-Chancellor mentioned that the University has established its second off-campus at Nagadena Halli, Doddaballapura Taluk, Bengalure Rural District and will offer B.Tech and Management programmes from the academic year 2012-13. He said that the University has developed state-of-the-art infrastructure facilities for classrooms, laboratories and other support services. The Bengaluru campus is expected to emerge as a potential hub to impart education, training and entrepreneurship development skills to the youth, he added. He informed that the University identified potential departments in Science & Technology for coverage under FIST programme to enable to undertake fundamental as well as applied research.
